Each Wednesday, I examine the spreads for the games being played the upcoming weekend, and pick the underdogs and favorites are most likely to cover. (Editor’s Note: 4FanSports in no way endorses gambling, because that would be irresponsible.)
It’s time again for this weeks edition of “Taking on Vegas”. In the spirit of the bowl season, these picks will only reflect the college bowl games, and not any other sports, so deal with it. Now you may be wondering why this article is just a tad bit late, and that is because I was on a top covert mission trying to prolong the end of the world that is allegedly coming. But fear not my friends, God’s green earth is in no danger thanks to 4FanSports, and with that I bring you the picks of the weekend. My record last week was 3-2, continuing my undefeated streak of having at least a .500 record against Vegas since the beginning of this running article. Excuse me while I give a Tiger Woods-esque fist pump. And now the picks…
First is the Boise State Broncos. They take on the Washington Huskies in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl in, you guessed it, Las Vegas. Boise State is a -6 point favorite in this bowl game. I don’t know much about either team, but I do know that Chris Peterson is the coach of Boise State, and he is a highly sought after coach that refuses to leave Idaho, no matter how much money he is offered. That, my friends, is loyalty. And anyone that can remain loyal to a team in Idaho deserves to be rewarded, so enjoy your MAACO Las Vegas Bowl Championship Coach Peterson, I hope it was worth it.
Next, we have Central Michigan, taking on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Little Caesar’s Bowl in Detroit, Michigan. This game is most known for having two mascots where nobody knows what they are, but we persevere. In what will serve as a home game, assuming anyone cares about Central Michigan football, it will be difficult for Western Kentucky to come into Detroit with a victory. But even if you like WKU better, CMU is receiving a generous +5 ½ points on top of the home-field advantage. I like the Chippewas in this one, whatever the hell a Chippewa is.
Texas Tech will meet Minnesota in the Meinke Car Care Texas Bowl in Houston, Texas. Again, Texas Tech will be receiving virtual home-field advantage, playing their bowl game in their home state. Minnesota isn’t exactly known for having a powerhouse football program, and I really like Kliff Kingsbury’s offense at Texas Tech. Texas Tech scores a lot of points, and I don’t think Minnesota will be able to keep up, hence my pick of the Red Raiders overcoming the -13 points.
West Virginia was a huge disappointment this year. We all know this. But out of all the wrong they did, perhaps the most “right” thing they did was leave the Big East for the greener pastures of the Big 12. They will be meeting Syracuse in one of the more interesting bowl games of the entire bowl season, the Pinstripe Bowl, taking place in good ol’ Yankees Stadium. I am going against the home team in this one, the Syracuse Orange because they had a very pedestrian record, despite modest competition in the Big East. West Virginia covers the -4 easily in this one.
Finally, the BCS National Championship game, Alabama vs Notre Dame. Notre Dame went the season entire season without a single loss. That has to earn them some respect right? No. No it does not. Alabama is going to prove why they are the best team in the best conference in the nation, similarly to last year’s National Championship where Alabama absolutely wiped the floor with LSU, I expect a similar outcome here. Alabama covers the -10. I even think this one could get kind of ugly, maybe even surpassing the 20 point mark. Yes I am that confident in the Tide or not confident in the Irish. Whichever way you want to look at it.
Enjoy the Bowl Season ladies and gentleman. Also, make sure you check out all of the 4FanSports writers’ picks in the latest podcast. Watch the bowl games, hopefully your favorite team wins, because mine didn’t even make a bowl. I’m going to go cry now.
